Important Dates
Wednesday, January 30th: Science Expo Early-Bird Set up from 4-5 pm.

Reading: This week in reading students will be listening to the book Harriet Tubman: A Woman of Courage. Students will be working on explaining how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text. Students will practice by reading a text and asking themselves: What reasons and evidence does the author use to support this point?


Math: This week in math, students will continue learning how to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators. Students can do this by using bar models, number lines, or by creating common denominators. Our classrooms will also be transformed into a "Math Bakery" from Wednesday-Friday, which is a project-based learning way of practicing the skill of comparing fractions and creating equivalent fractions. 

Grammar: This week in grammar, students will continue to learn about idioms. 

Writing: This week in writing, students will continue working on their historical information books about a topic related to the American Revolution.
 

Science: This week in science, students will be learning about how to compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars and planets.

This week in reading, we continue with learning how to interpret visual information in a text and explain how it helps them understand the text.

Math: 
This week in Math, students will continue studying fractions, focusing on comparing fractions with our lessons. 

We can compare fractions with different denominators by using visual fraction models. It is very important to remember though that you can only compare fractions of the SAME whole.

Grammar:
Students will begin a study on Idioms this week. Idioms are words, phrases, or expressions that are either grammatically unusual, or their meaning cannot be taken literally.
 “Long time, no see!”    “It's raining cats and dogs!”

Writing:
Students will be working on our Heritage Night projects.

Social Studies:
Students will be reviewing for Social Studies test that will be this week. Student will review for 2 days. The test will focus on the Bill of Rights (specifically the first amendment) and Branches of Government lessons. The study guide will be sent home on Monday.

Math:
This week in math, students will continue to learn about equivalent fractions. Students will work to solve problems with fractions using bar models and number lines. Students will learn to first label number lines and then compare number lines to find equivalencies. 
 
Grammar:
Students will continue to learn about similes and metaphors. Students will create their own similes and will create drawings of similes and metaphors in action.











Writing:
Students are writing an informational writing piece with several chapters on a Revolutionary War topic (person, event, etc.). Students will have to research and write on this topic over several weeks. Students will write an introduction all about the American Revolution before writing about their chosen Revolution topic.

Social Studies:
Students will be learning about the three branches of government at the federal, state, and local level. Students need to understand the three branches were created to check and balance out the others.

Week of January 7 - 11

Welcome back! We hope you all had a warm and restful holiday break with your families. We, the fourth grade team, are so excited to jump back in.

Reading: This week in reading, students will review text structure and knowing the structure of a text can help them better understand what they read.
Math: Students will review what a fraction is and brainstorm when and where they see fractions used in real life. We will then practice how to identify equivalent fractions. To do this, we will be using the Bar Model and Number Lines as this helps students to visualize equivalence.
Writing: Students will complete an independent informational writing sample as a pre-assessment (criteria pasted below). We will then review what informational writing is and guide students through the process of selecting a topic and text structure that aligns best with their chosen topic.
Social Studies: Students will review all of the rights given to them through the First Amendment.
