Timothy Road will be hosting clusters for all students starting in January. See the message below from Kisha Bailey and consider leading a cluster for students!

You are invited to join the Local School Governance Team and teachers of Timothy Road Elementary School as we implement EPIC Clusters. EPIC is the Emotional Prosperity in Children.

Please join us in leading a small group of children in an interest/hobby that you share.  We will match students to your group, and a classroom teacher will accompany and assist you. We will also purchase all materials needed for your cluster. The clusters will meet on Fridays from January 11 through March 1 for one hour.

If you are interested in leading an EPIC Cluster, please complete this brief interest survey.  https://goo.gl/forms/j5Sh5r4eqUvnGSz72
Thank you for your interest in our project!

With EPIC appreciation,

Kisha Bailey

Reading:  Students will continue working on comparing and contrasting a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic. Students will also work on determining the main idea of a text and explaining how it is supported by key details.

Math: Students will learn how to convert units measurements. Students will do this with conversion charts and converting units of measurements word problems.

Sample problems:

To solve this conversion table students would complete the following steps:
1. 2 x 8 = 16 ounces
2. 3 x 8 = 24 ounces or 24/8 = 3
3. 5 x 8 = 40 or 40/8 = 5
4. 7 x 8 = 56

In this sample problem the students would need to complete the following steps:
1. 1 liter + 3 liters = 4 liters
2.  4 liters x 1,000 milliliters = 4,000 milliliters
3.  4,000 milliliters divided by 500 milliliters = 8
4. Answer the question: 8 students will get juice at snack.

Grammar: This week in grammar, students will continue learning how to identify prepositional phrases and use them in their writing.

Reading: This week in reading, students are determining the meanings of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology. We are also working on the reading strategy, "Steps to determining importance". Click here to see an example!

Math:

Monday: Unit 3 Pre-Test on area and perimeter

This week in math, students will begin learning about area and perimeter. Students will learn how to find area and perimeter using mathematical formulas within real world problems.

Grammar: This week in grammar, students will be working on using reference materials to determine the meaning of unknown words. Students will practice this with dictionaries, thesauruses, and textbooks. Writing: This week in writing, students will finish up the final drafts of their opinion pieces. They will then begin learning about how to transform an opinion writing into a persuasive piece of writing.
Science/Social Studies: Students will finish up the unit in science on light and take their end of unit test on Tuesday. Students were given study guides on Wednesday of this past week to prepare for this test.Students will then begin the next unit of social studies, learning about the Article of Confederation, and the challenges faced by the framers of the constitution.

Week of November 5th - 9th

Monday, November 5:  Academic Aspiration Day

Tuesday, November 6th: NO SCHOOL!!!

Thursday: Grandparents' Lunch and Bingo Night

Reading: This week in reading, students are reviewing the difference between first-person point of view and third-person point of view. We call this an author's narration style. For more information and a sample passage click here.

Math: This week in math, students are doing a mixed review of all the concepts we have covered for unit 2: multiplication using partial product and division using the Big 7.
The BIG PICTURE of what we want students to understand is that we can use what we know about multiplication to divide. We are continuing to support students in mastering their math facts so that they can apply these when working with larger numbers. In this way, they can successfully subtract large chunks when dividing. We are also reviewing the meanings of the words partial product, partial quotient, and remainder.

Friday: Unit 2 Post Test

Writing: After students finish revising and editing their opinion writing pieces this week, they will be pulling out their thesis and working to turn it into a persuasive thesis. This means they have to take themselves out of the equation and stating their thesis as a general statement about life.

Science: Finally, we will be wrapping up our Light unit this week by reviewing the difference between the 3 types of lenses: convex, concave, and prisms.
Students will bring home a study guide this week. They will have a science test the following week.

Week of October 29 - November 2

Check out our blog post to learn what your students will be working on in each subject!

Reading: This week in reading we will be working on comparing and contrasting text. In fourth grade students must compare and contrast the topic, pattern of events, and theme of two stories. Students have finished The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snickets and will be comparing and contrasting this story to The Witches by Roald Dahl.
Click the link here to look at a sample of how we are teaching students to compare and contrast.

Math: Next week in math we will continue working on division and multiplication. Students will work on these concepts within word problems.

How to complete a division problem:

Step 1:  Draw a big seven and put your numbers in the correct place.
Step 2:  Look at each place value and ask "What can I multiply by 3 that will get me as close to that number without going over?"  Example: 3 X 100=300 is as close to 400 as I can get without going over.
Step 3: Write the partial quotient on the side.
Step 4: Write the quotient under the number you are dividing.
Step 5: Subtract
Step 6: Repeat the process
Step 7:  Add all the partial quotients up on the side.
Step 8: Write the quotient on the top of the sever.  Include any remainders.

Here is how to complete a multiplication problem.

Here is a sample of a word problem students will be working on this week. Students will need to understand how to interpret remainders within division problems.

Grammar: Students will be learning about relative adverbs.

Writing: Students will continue drafting their opinion piece. Students will focus on organizing their opinion essays.

Science: Students will continue to learn about light. Students will focus on the following vocabulary: transparent, translucent, and opaque.
