Week of May 13-17

Thank you for a wonderful year!

* We will watch Series of Unfortunate Events and James and the Giant Peach this week so please sign and return the permission slip if you would like your child to participate (Goes home in the May 8 Wednesday folder).

Important Dates:

  • May 16: Class Party and Last Day for ASP 
  • May 17: Last Day for Students 

Reading:
Students will learn about the Civil War by reading passages with the teacher and discussing the big ideas. Students will review inference through a novel study.   

Math: 

Students will review what they learned in the geometry unit and apply their knowledge to create a geometry town.

ELT/Science:
Students will continue to review force and motion.

Writing/Grammar:
Students will complete their memory book and continue practicing cursive writing skills.

Social Studies:
In social studies, students will use what they are learning about Westward Expansion and the Civil War to complete an ABC book. Guidelines for the project are outlined below. Project is due this week.

Week of May 6-10

Important Dates:

  • May 6, 7, & 8: MAP Testing from 12-2pm.

  • May 17: Last Day for Students 


Reading:
Students will learn about the Civil War by reading passages with the teacher and discussing the big ideas. We will use reading time to cover geometry standards in math in preparation for their Math Unit Test on Friday.

Math: 

Students will learn to classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Students will also learn how to recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.




ELT/Science:
Monday- Wednesday MAP TESTING
While some classes are finishing BAS assessments, students will continue to review force and motion, one of our  science standards.

Writing/Grammar:
Monday- Wednesday MAP TESTING
Students will be completing a memory book and practicing cursive writing skills.

Social Studies:
Monday- Wednesday MAP TESTING

Week of April 29 to May 3

Reading
During the first two days of reading this week, students will learn about Westward Expansion by reading passages with the teacher and discussing the big ideas. Students will also practice using the RACE model (Restate, Answer, Cite Evidence, Explain) to answer constructed response questions related to the content. Students will take the unit post test on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, we will use reading time to cover standards in math.



Math
In math, students will review the types of problems they will encounter in their next unit post test and concepts in geometry such as polygons, quadrilaterals, and parallelograms. Students will analyze these shapes to form relationships among them.

ELT
While some classes are finishing BAS assessments, students will review force and motion, one of our  science standards.

Writing 
For writing this week, we will continue practicing how to “stretch out sentences” and review prepositional phrases in grammar.




Social Studies
In social studies, students will use what they are learning about Westward Expansion and the Civil War to complete a Civil War ABC book. Guidelines for the project are outlined below.

Week of April 22 - April 26

Thursday, April 25th: Choir rehearsal in Marlow's Room @ 3:00 pm
Friday, April 26th: TRES Spring Fling @ 6:00 pm

Due to testing going on this week, our schedule looks a little different than usual. We will only have three full days (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) that the schedule will look like usual and we will touch on all subjects.

On Monday, students will review and fill out the study guide for our upcoming Solar System test. This test will cover space technology, the difference between planets and stars, the phases of the moon, what causes day and night, and what causes the seasons. They will be taking the study guide home to prepare.


On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, students will be pulled individually to complete the BAS reading assessment. This will happen during our ELT (Extra Learning Time).

Reading
This week in reading, students will review how to identify the main idea of a nonfiction text. We will also begin reading the chapter book,  James and the Giant Peach.

Math
In math this week, students will learn how to add and subtract decimals within word problems. We will show students how to write an equation that matches the problem by first identifying which operation fits what the problem is asking. Students will then practice drawing models as a strategy for adding and subtracting decimals. A sample word problem looks like this:

Writing
In writing this week, students will learn how to "stretch out" sentences as a way to make their writing more interesting and exciting to read.


Science
Students will be given time in class to review for our test. We will play a review game on Kahoot and take the test on Thursday

Reading: Students will review context clues, main ideal, theme, and compare and contrast in preparation for Milestones Testing.
                


   

Comparing and contrasting two different stories can help you better understand common topics, patterns of events, and themes in stories from different cultures.
  • The topic is the subject of a story.  A common topic in many stories is the struggle between good and evil.
  • The pattern of events is what happens in the story. One common pattern of events is the hero’s quest. The main character goes on a journey to achieve a goal or solve a problem.
  • The theme of a story is its central idea or message about life. Sometimes the theme is expressed as a moral, or lesson, such as “look before you leap.”
Math:  Students will continue work with decimals.  Students will be converting fractions to decimals and comparing decimals.

**Special Announcement**
Students should wear their navy blue EPIC cluster t-shirt to the College Football Hall of Fame field trip. Students are asked to not bring any money with them on this trip.

Students will continue learning about three different types of informational text. They will use the information that they read to help explain historical and scientific events and procedures.

Math: Students will learn how to create equivalent fractions with denominators of tenths and hundredths. Students will then use this to add tenths and hundredths fractions together. 




Grammar: Students will continue learning about progressive verbs. Progressive verbs are verbs that use a form helping verb "to be" in front of a verb ending in -ing. 


Writing:  Students will continue learning how to analyze a prompt for writing. Students will focus this with an opinion text and learn how to pull evidence from more than one text to support their opinion. This will help them prepare for the Georgia Milestone writing assessment.

Math: Students will continue reviewing for their unit 5 math post test. This test focuses on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, and decomposing fractions with visual models. Check out the sample test questions here!

Reading: This week in reading, students will review summarizing and making inferences within a text.

 

Math: This week in math, students will be reviewing for the Unit 5 post test (this will be the following Friday, March 29th). Students will review decomposing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, line plots with fractions and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.












Grammar: This week we will only have 1 day of grammar due to Early Release. On this day, we will review ordering adjectives.



Writing: This week we will only have 1 day of writing due to Early Release. On this day, students will complete milestone writing practice.

Science: This week we will only have 1 day of science due to Early Release. On this day, students will continue to learn about what causes the seasons.
